Hue or Danang is a difficult decision for most of our customers. Going to Hoi An is a given and ideally we would recommend that you explore both Hue and Danang as well, but with limited time sometimes its hard to make the right choice.
With a long sweeping coastline resulting in a fantastic metropolitan beach and a few hidden spots not far from the city, Danang makes a much better beach destination than Hue. Hue’s beaches are adequate if you’re in desperate need of the ocean, but almost everyone would opt for Da nang if given the choice.
Vietnam travel guides are absolutely right when the describe Hue as a food giant. Hue food has travelled across the country and even the world, but of course its place of origin is still the best place to eat it. Favorite must-trys are beef noodle soup and the Hue specialty cakes. Danang is a relatively new city and hasn’t had long enough to develop a distinct food personality yet, and thus Hue has to be the winner of this category.
Hue is one of the most culturally rich cities in the country. With distinct traditional art forms that were cultivated during Hue’s royal years and a blossoming contemporary art scene, Hue makes a case for being one of the most culturally vibrant cities in Asia. Danang offers much less in terms of traditional or historic culture (though the Cham Museum is excellent), so for culture vultures Hue will always make the better city.
With the gorgeous Son Tra Peninsula, spectacular Hai Van Pass and a stunning mountain backdrop, Danang is sure to have one of the most beautiful settings of any city in Vietnam and its all to easy to go off and discover it. The countryside surrounding Hue is pleasant, though perhaps not phenomenal, which is why nature enthusiasts who have to choose between Danang and Hue better go for the former.
The architecture in Hue and Danang is completely different. Hue’s architecture is traditional with a clear colonial French influence whereas Danang seems to be sprouting a new skyscraper or brightly colored bridge each year. However, Danang’s modern architecture is still dwarfed (quite literally) by that of Saigon, which is why we think thatHue make for the best choice in this category.
