A land of deep valleys and dzongs perched on precarious peaks, Bhutan is one of the most isolated nations in the world; its traditional culture is strictly protected and visitor numbers are carefully regulated.

These plantations were established to prevent sand drift but were only partly successful. Evidence of this phenomenon can still be found in such dramatic sights as the Sand-Covered Church.
